What to Expect A card reader without drama?

So this thing gets 4 stars. Now that it's fully functional I'd give it an A, but I had to work hard to make it rock 'n' roll. At the same time, the manufacturer cannot be accused of hating Apple products by the military. Listen, bottom line: if you have a Mac and want to access mil sites, you should buy this thing. That works great. It's surprisingly small (smaller than a flash drive when folded) and works really well. DO NOT STOP READING! It was close. So if you want to get the best…

Pros
  • Ccid Compliant
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

works for me on Computers & Accessories

As other users have said, yes, it will block any ports nearby with the USB port you plug it into. It's not a design flaw, it's just the only way a tiny USB CAC reader should be (it should be wide enough to accept your card). Accessing the military website is not a complete solution. Yes, Windows will install the correct drivers and such, but you may need to purchase an ActiveClient for more functionality (reading your DoD card and changing your password) and you will certainly need the correct…

  • Compact and Lightweight Dongle Card Reader

Compact but works great

I am a National Guard officer. I didn't get an official computer, so I have to use my laptop to do all the countless paperwork that comes up during the week. I've had other card readers, but they're bulky and take up space in my backpack. This one is small, light weight and goes great with my army CAC. The first time you use it, you need to be connected to the Internet to allow Windows to automatically download the drivers, but after that everything is fine. I have successfully used it to log…

It was very convenient

First of all, I would like to say that the small strap that came with it broke within a year. I bought this card reader in 2015, so I'm not surprised that the cable broke. It didn't touch me enough that I wanted to give it less than 5 stars because I could track it. I need a CaC reader so I always keep one in my computer bag (I've looked through a few of these, this one stays). This is a solid purchase. It's not bulky, it's not flimsy. It's not obvious and easy to hide (when you're in a place…

Pros
  • Compact and lightweight key form factor card reader
Cons
  • Not as thick as other models

SCR3500 is not normally approved by the government, but it is a card reader that can be used by any PIV and CAC card is bought by users because it offers everything in a much more compact yet sturdier package. My previous SCR3500 lasted six years with very poor handling and finally broke the wing this winter. The replacement has a similar shape, but this version has much better wing reinforcement and better orientation for right-side-up card insertion. The built-in software is protected from…

Pros
  • Compatible with all major smart cards and related industry standards
