Description of Japanese Donabe Ceramic Casserole Earthenware

Measures approximately 10" Diameter and 6" Height. Pot holds a capacity of 72fl oz. Perfect for serving 3-4 people. Japanese clay pot (donabe) cooking is one of the oldest methods of cooking that is versatile and simple yet prepares dramatic and comforting one-pot meals. Made of high quality earthen clay with a thick and double lidded opening and lid. Crafted by artisan in Japan. Great for preparing traditional Japanese meals like mixed rice dish, soup, casseroles. Perfect for gift giving for any occasion, especially house warming gift. Donabe eating encourages families to sit around the table and pick items directly from the pot, thus the term "one pot harmony".

Cheap Quality Donabe Dish Disappoints

I was expecting more from this "authentic" Japanese casserole dish. As my tests showed it didn't evenly distribute heat and resulted in an unevenly cooked meal .The only pro is THAT it`s aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up to its promise of being a durable and functional piece of bakeware for the home and kitchen. Save your money and invest in a more reputable brand..

Pros
  • Great for slow cooking and retaining heat.
Cons
  • Not suitable for high heat cooking methods like searing or grilling.

Arrived with microcracks inside, poor glaze

I have lived in Japan for a long time with my wife (who is Japanese and a great cook) so we didn't stop used to the ceramic Donabe pots that we often used in winter. I bought this and it's a terrible disappointment that I had to return it. A hairline crack was visible on the inside when first used. This is not transport damage, but either an existing defect that discolours when cooking, or inferior ceramics that break when heated. Anyway, I didn't want to believe that this hairline wouldn't…

Pros
  • Great for cooking traditional Japanese dishes such as rice dishes, soups, casseroles
Cons
  • Hard to tell
