I like my new kitchen towels. Long enough to hang over the pole but not so long that it hangs too low. I use a few a day because I love dry towels. If you hang it up after washing the dishes, it'll probably be dry by the next meal. But if you're constantly washing your hands and drying dishes (I use one at a time) while cooking, you'll need to bring more towels as they get wet pretty quickly. First of all, I've never owned real kitchen towels, so I don't have a better comparison tool. They are great for drying dishes though (that's what I bought them for). One towel is enough to dry almost two full sinks, although I try not to have that many.
