What I love about them: - Comes in a nice tin to keep your pencils organized - Each pencil is numbered so you can try them on - The pigmentation is surprisingly rich, but they require water to open. Few colors compared to other 3 brands. I've found the pencils to be hard and not easy to break so they feel a little scratchy and you have to work a lot harder to get deep coverage when used as basic colored pencils. However, I have found that they activate perfectly with some water and seem to stay alive depending on how much water you add. Caran d'Ache water-soluble pencils I discovered it in 1986 and it was love at first sight. Since then I have collected, tested, color charted and occasionally even painted all the major brands on the market including Faber Castell, Derwent, Staedler, Brunezeel and a few others. I generally avoid really cheap "student" pencils because they're harder to work with, don't give you as even coverage, blending, or get as nice color as expensive artist's brands.
