Well, the fan makes white noise, so we bought it. A month and a half later, however, the fan makes a high-pitched hum that only gets worse over time. This used to happen at the lowest settings, which disappeared when the medium settings were turned on. Now it gets worse even on medium settings. We found that lowering the fan to the floor helped mitigate the obnoxious noise, but also made it worse. It is too late to return the fan, so we are very dissatisfied with this purchase.
