better for drilling a pilot hole in metal. Bit spacing works well in steel, but not well for making the first whole. I drill 3/16 steel all the time. I've drilled about 50 holes in 3/16 steel with it and the tip is very dull but the steps still drill well.

I've found that using a hammer drill and a non-slip metal drill bit and using oil to keep the tip of the drill bit cool helps.
