When not in use, the base can be unscrewed, flipped up and reinserted into the bottom of the monopod, then screwed back on. This base also works with Manfrotto 679, 679B, 680, 680B, 681, 681B monopods. I chose the 680B because it's the smallest of the 679, 680 and 681 series. Note: the base is also sold as part of the Manfrotto 682B freestanding monopod, which consists of the 681 monopod and this base. The quality of the base is what you would expect from Manfrotto. It is very well built and…

A little improvisation never hurts!

I got the foldable base with the 680B monopod so I don't have to take my tripod anywhere; Stuffing a monopod in a case was an attractive idea. So getting a base meant having an ultra-portable tripod without having to pay for the carbon fiber equivalent. Firstly, a monopod without a base is only good when there is a lot of light. The all-metal construction (except for the rubber O-ring) feels sturdy and durable. It's fairly stable, although it doesn't take much effort to bring it down. When using this monopod, you still need to hold it. The problem is that when I left the camera alone, it was seldom level. The video was always…

Worth considering Manfrotto Monopod

I'm an avid semi-professional nature and wildlife photographer and have been using my Manfrotto 680B with both ball and gym heads for almost 10 years. While monopods are a good tool when you can't or don't want to fiddle with a tripod, they still can't sufficiently reduce shake or vibration when using long focal length lenses and heavy lenses in many lighting conditions to the point where you can consistently get very sharp images if you don't increase your camera's ISO a lot (even with fast…
