Review on πŸ” Improved SEO: Manfrotto 678 Monopod Folding Base, Universally Compatible (Black) by Molly Rodriguez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Worth considering Manfrotto Monopod

I'm an avid semi-professional nature and wildlife photographer and have been using my Manfrotto 680B with both ball and gym heads for almost 10 years. While monopods are a good tool when you can't or don't want to fiddle with a tripod, they still can't sufficiently reduce shake or vibration when using long focal length lenses and heavy lenses in many lighting conditions to the point where you can consistently get very sharp images if you don't increase your camera's ISO a lot (even with fast f2.8 lenses), which of course introduces a lot of noise into your image (the amount of which depends very much on the quality of the sensor in your camera and when your image is severely underexposed). If you're buying a stabilizer base for this monopod and don't really expect it to turn the monopod into a tripod in terms of stability (for auto sync or long exposure with a remote release), then you'll probably rate this product a 4 or 5. Otherwise, you will You will be disappointed with the product as there really is no way to turn a monopod into a support as strong as a tripod. You need realities Meet your expectations and choose the right tool for the shooting conditions. I've found that while the base doesn't make a monopod as stable as a tripod, it definitely provides more stability and less shake to your images depending on the subject and shooting conditions. , and since you're more likely to use image stabilization when shooting with a monopod (especially with moving subjects like wildlife), you can take advantage of image stabilization and shoot at a slower shutter speed than without a base. This allows for more flexibility in exposure settings and may allow you to lower your ISO for better image quality. All of these are significant benefits of taking your job seriously. The base works very well and can be further stabilized by placing weight (heavy sand or bean bags) or your feet on the support legs. Then you might be thinking why not use a tripod. But tight spaces often don't have room for a tripod, so it's good stability, a space saver, not to mention a weighty alternative to a tripod. Now you won't really use a cable release with this product unless you are using a very small/light camera with no wind etc. but for the right shooting conditions this is a great product and an essential trigger for your photography gear. You should experiment with setting the base. There are several ways to do this, one is more stable than the other, but is not recommended by the manufacturer. There are a few other reviews on the Revain website that go into a bit more detail on this, so I won't go into too much detail here. Happy shooting.
