Mixed feelings about hats and caps

I work on a dock in Chicago. With this balaclava I've been on my first shift for three hours. Now 18 degrees. While I can look at the stitching and say it's well made, the fact of the matter is that my regular $7 balaclava is just as warm. The good thing about wool is that if it covers the mouth as advertised, the area doesn't feel as damp and it retains heat better. To me, however, that doesn't justify the fact that it's $33 more expensive than my regular one. And I definitely wouldn't go for…

I used to have one like this, much better than before

I used to have either this model or the medium version and it's a lot better than the one I had 10 years ago. I remember when I got the old one it didn't hold as tight (though not uncomfortable) as this one. I also hope this one doesn't have a problem keeping a lot of water out of your breath and pitting like the old one did, it seems like it's been completely redesigned. I will try to remember to update my review in the future.

Warm and lightweight

This has been a lifesaver for me. I bought it to wear to work on wildfires during the winter months which meant spending several long hours in the cold, then sweating from bullets around a campfire in the middle of the day and ending the day in the cold again, when the fire was out. Outside. This cap helped me get through it all! It worked as a great base layer in the cold and was easy to remove once it warmed up. It dries fairly quickly so my sweat evaporated and was ready to warm up again by…

Just. Excellent.: Hats and Caps

This balaclava is perfect. I used it to walk over a mile to and from school last winter and it's fantastic. I've used it in temperatures as low as -38 degrees Fahrenheit and wind speeds of 10 to 15 mph. It worked great over a beard for those of you guys (or women for that matter) who love to naturally wrap up your face in winter. I don't have any other balaclavas to compare but this one definitely met or exceeded what I should expect from Merino wool and minus 33. Comfortable, warm, great for a

I love wool but not for a balaclava

I have a few Merino wool items that I love (socks, underwear, sweaters, scarves) but not for a balaclava. I don't like wool for a ski balaclava. Pros: The reason I took a wool balaclava was to avoid bad breath in my balaclava. Wool is excellent for this purpose, wool has natural odor-fighting properties. The thicker expedition version protects well against wind and extreme cold (tested to 12f or -9f with wind chill). Cons: Wool absorbs water and becomes very heavy. When wet from heavy breathing
