My first ham radio station: CB & Two-Way Radios

Purchased 2nd for me and my husband to communicate while he works in the garage. We live where there are many houses and apartments. The maximum distance we worked at with a standard antenna was about half a mile. We plan to put a Nagoya 771 on it so it can move on. We like this radio very much. It's worth it. You can either program it manually or buy a cable. It feels good in the hand. Doesn't feel cheap. And just so you know. They have fantastic customer service.

  • Certified
Cons
  • Minor Repairability

Baofeng or go home!

Great little radio. I work two jobs. On one of them I use Baofeng in rough sea conditions. Perfectly uses all sea channels. In my second job I am a first responder for emergency services. Little Baofeng keeps me updated on multiple channels, sometimes in hot and smoky conditions, in mud and rain. I recommend this radio. It is reliable and offers good battery life both in standby mode and when using the broadcast. The range is often comparable to a 25 watt radio. Device to device distance isโ€ฆ

Just buy directly from Baofeng

The product itself, 2 radios, good respect. It can be purchased directly from the Chinese manufacturer Baofeng, or through Mirkit, which promises a US-based warranty and support. Unfortunately, Mirkit has no website or address and can only be contacted through Revain. They are slow to respond and there doesn't really seem to be a guarantee. The included programming cable is a trifle that only works on Windows if a driver can be found. The product description does not say so. So the cable isโ€ฆ

Baofeng Radio UV-5R MK5 8W MP Max Power - NO ADVICE 8 WATTS

In general, an excellent walkie-talkie, apart from the inconsistency with the declared wattage. ADVANTAGES: - Low price for a dual band radio - Light and compact size - I like the "feel" when holding the radio in my hand - "Display" shows different "colors" (user configurable ) for Tx and Rx - It has VOICE ACKNOWLEDGMENT for various functions. When you change the preset MEMORY CHANNELS, you don't have to look at the display to see which channel is, as the VOICE tells you - the display is quiteโ€ฆ

Best UV-5r Radio Available

This is the best UV-5r option. I had original uv-5r and uv-5r v2. This works just like any other uv-5r but with an extra level of performance. I programmed CHIRP with uv-5r and it worked great. The only limitation in CHIRP is that you only have two power level options (L for 1W and H for 8W. The M 4W option is not in CHIRP). That's fine as I was planning to only run everything at the high 8W power level. It's also the only uv-5r I own that offers smooth volume control when a speaker/mic isโ€ฆ

Bao 8W is the best!

My first radio was a Bao UV-5r 5w that my parents gave me for my birthday. This is a really cute little ham radio and I fell in love with it the moment I took it out of the box. The radio has a cool design and isn't heavy at all, so I carry it in my everyday bag. A year later I needed another walkie talkie for my friend so I decided to buy one as the price is really reasonable. The only problem I had was that since I live in a city, in some cases the signal couldn't reach the repeater (maybeโ€ฆ

Lessons learned, questions and a few complaints.

Update: Added a star (3 to 4) after testing this unit with an SWR/power meter. Low, Medium, High power tested at (W) 0.8-1, 4-5, 6-7.4 which is respectable for a radio of this size. Original Review: I'm new to ham radio - about a week. And if you're just starting out, then you're probably pretty confused, just like me (and still am). But here's what I've learned so far: First, if you're wondering what's going on with all the different Baofeng UV-5* and UV-8* models, here's what I've learned: It
