Description of 💻 Monoprice USB Extender: Reliable CAT5E/CAT6 Connection up to 150ft

USB specifications limit the maximum run for USB to only 15ft. This can make placement of USB devices difficult especially in a wide area. This can be especially convenient if you already have unused Ethernet cabling pre-installed in your walls.

But it doesn't work perfectly.

This device works but has some real limitations. USB signals extended with this device have a significant voltage drop, so you can use only the simplest devices that do not require a lot of power over medium to long distances. Using a passive USB hub to connect more than one device at the remote end is not possible, even with short runtimes. However, both problems can be solved by using a remotely powered USB hub.

Works well if not idle for long periods of time.

I use this product to control the IC7300 transceiver from 50 feet away. I use Cat6 flat cable. Completely plug and play. UPDATE: After two days of use, I've found that if this USB extender device is left unused for several hours, it will disconnect and you have to either unplug and plug it back in, or restart. Computer. I'll try one of the more expensive extension cord brands and see what happens.

USB over 150 feet! - USB network adapter

I ordered 6 of these devices and they work great! All you have to do is plug one end into your computer and the other end into a USB device with a Category 5 or 6 Ethernet cable in between. It is so easy. I've used it to program Arduino devices and transfer files back and forth, as well as using a USB keyboard and mouse over a network cable. Highly recommended!

Suitable for touch panel control

This product works as expected. My goal was to route a USB signal from a PC to an interactive widescreen touch display in a classroom. I was able to control the PC via touch input from the display as intended. Approximately 50 feet of Cat6 was installed in the wall, with one end plugged directly into an 8P8C/RJ-45 and the other end plugged into a wall outlet and connected with a 6 foot patch cord. I ordered some USB extenders to test before deploying.

Pros
  • Good
Cons
  • Not sure

According to the post below, it kinda works but the performance isn't 'supported'. The controller and other devices will randomly turn on and off based on power consumption. I've tried my best to get this product to work as advertised, but it just doesn't seem possible for it to work consistently. 12/24/2019: UPDATED TOK, after leaving a very negative review, I decided to solve this problem. MonoPrice is a reputable company and it was hard for me to imagine that they would sell such an…

Worked great to monitor a backup battery in another room.

I have a backup battery in my network cabinet. I wanted to control it from my laptop, so I connected one of the USB extenders to my laptop, which connects to the RJ45 port. I then unplugged the Category 5e cable from the switch, plugged it into another USB extender, and then plugged it into the backup battery. Now I can monitor my backup battery without having to take my laptop to check its status. The distance between the two devices is about 30 feet.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • No power

Great for my purpose.

I have a video surveillance system with a DVR in a closet at the other end of my house. That's about 40 feet and 3 walls from where I have my surveillance gear. I want to use a wireless mouse to control the dash cam. But no wireless mouse can do that. I tried a USB extender and it didn't work at all. But with this product and a 50ft ethernet cable it now works like it's right in front of me. I couldn't be happier with this product. And it's just plug and play.

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • Out of style

Ideal for mouse extension

I recently upgraded my CCTV system. It mounts remotely, and I extend the video and mouse cables to a more convenient location. I used a USB cable extender (30ft) with a cable amplifier powered by the USB port. Everything worked fine with the old DVR, but was unstable with the new one. The pointer jumped around and pretended I was pressing buttons, even though I wasn't actually doing it. I was looking for an externally powered amplifier when I came across this CAT 5 power strip. Luckily I had a…
