It may break if dropped, crushed, or otherwise while in a solid state. Just hold it under water or soak it in a bowl or something and it will soften up quickly. I've been using this sponge for a few weeks now and I'm very satisfied. I originally ordered this because I was concerned about the build up of bacteria in the cheap plastic loofahs. I usually use it and I know bamboo is antimicrobial.
