Shorter range and more difficult to set up than Linksys

I had a Linksys SRX but needed a second AP for full home coverage. The Linksys was an older model and one complaint was that it would turn off randomly, I think mostly after power outages. I have placed this Netgear product in the same location and have received half the bars on each of the multiple laptops I use in the same location where I have used Linksys. I changed the position of the access point in all possible ways. Linkys has a much better range. Also, the installation requires you toโ€ฆ

Default for Netgear

I replaced my old access point with this one. I just stuck with Netgear because no other vendor offers similar products at this price point. The feature set isn't that different from others on the market today, but it works very well in my home setup. It connects to a separate VLAN on my Cisco ASA5505 and blocks traffic to other WAP devices connected to it. This works great for my two iPhones, PSP, Archos and two laptops that never need more than one internet connection.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Only available in black

Powerful transmitter!

This product is designed for use with a router and connects to the router. In fact, this is a long-range antenna and a real flamethrower. It can be used with your existing WiFi router to greatly extend its range, or turn a non-WiFi router into a WiFi router. DO NOT expect to connect a DSL or cable modem to this unit and have it act as a router. You MUST have a router. With this device you can cover an entire residential area with WLAN if you install it high enough.

Pros
  • Worth the money
Cons
  • Anything I can add?

Works well but instructions are a bit missing

I had to buy a new wireless access point because I didn't have a Link Sys. Spring. smells bad. It crashed and had to be restarted at least once a day if not more often. I bought this and had it hooked up in about half an hour or so. I've had it for a few weeks now and I haven't even had to restart it. So why four stars? I only wish they had paid as much attention to the directions as they did to the hotspot. In many steps they just tell you to do something without telling you how to do it. Iโ€ฆ
