Oil heaters are known to do their job well. However, these small pots are not attached to their bases. these are good oil heaters and appear to be well made. My only criticism is that the set comes with tea candles, but the candles are not metal bottomed candles which contain melted wax. You can use the included candles if you don't mind scraping off the melted wax and scratching the surface. Otherwise these heaters work great. However, a major disadvantage is that it is extremely unstable based on the base on which the heating pad is held. Yes, you need to adjust the amount of heat from the candle by adjusting the length of the wick. If your wick is too long, you'll experience what many other reviewers have mentioned: boiling.
