Good but not great

I bought one of these to try out a few home projects, mainly to use as a minecraft server but also as a retro arcade game. It works a little better than the Raspberry Pi3, but there's very little support, so you'll have to do a lot of troubleshooting or look for information yourself rather than having ready-made images that you can just download. I have yet to try the pi4 but the pi4 specs are said to be better than this xu4 and cheaper in price so there really is no reason to buy this xu4…

Pros
  • Excellent construction
Cons
  • Something different

Runs Armbian Bionic Server and Armbian Bionic Desktop perfectly

The aim was to test the CPU performance as a VPN router. This computer uses an octa-core Exynos 5422 processor. With a 110 Mbit/s connection, I was able to achieve a maximum speed of 65 Mbit/s in VPN over Ethernet. It's good, better than my old router. Also faster than the new Intel Atom Z8350 processor as a VPN, which peaks at 45Mbps as a VPN router. I was hoping to get close to 100Mbps, so I'll still be looking for a more powerful processor to meet that requirement. In fact, this mini PC runs

Lots of power for an SBC, plus a few headaches.

Fast but picky. I've been spending quite a bit of time with the SBC, this one is powerful but more demanding than others I've used. In order to get a working SD-based installation, I had to use a special Odroid image burning program. I am currently running Android TV on my XU4 and using an Odroid wireless USB port. The first hour with this SBC was frustrating until I found the Odroid Image Burner. I wanted to return the XU4. If you're having trouble, make sure you get a modded burner. I was…

You need an eMMC card

Tried 2 different SanDisk SD cards and booted them with Etcher following the instructions that came with the device and the instructions I found online. Couldn't get Odroid to boot with them and I set the selector switch correctly. Gave up and ordered a preinstalled eMMC card. Finally success. eMMC cards aren't cheap, and I would have saved time and effort if I'd known to order them up front. Apparently some people have put a lot of effort into getting SD cards to work. Basically I got this to…

Reliable but noisy

Works as it should. I bought this as a headless file server. It took a bit of trial and error to find the OpenMediaVault boot image. I managed to find the boot image on the third try. I used this device continuously for four months while backing up one of my other computers. My only complaint is that the fan squeaks a bit and tends to annoy our cats and can be heard in quiet scenes in movies. I've read that adjusting fan thresholds can fix the squeak, but haven't had time to find out yet.

Pros
  • Quick change
Cons
  • Not happy with everything
