good sound quality and easier to use

It couldn't be more intuitive. Without looking at the technical manual, I was able to set up the device, record a few tracks and download them to my computer. All of this within about five minutes out of the box. I used it to record interviews as well as music from my mariachi band so I could learn the songs. The sound quality is EXCELLENT and I can easily hear dialogue and chords on the first try. And the thing is ridiculously portable. If there was anything better, it would just be overkill.

Pros
  • A sea of positive emotions
Cons
  • Insecure

If the batteries run out or the device is not used for a long time and the batteries are replaced, the menu may suddenly appear in Chinese or Japanese instead of English. I had to call Olympus support to fix the problem. Correction below: 1) Unhold and put into voice mode. (2) Press and hold the View Menu button for a few seconds to enter Menu mode. (3) Scroll down (with the bottom of the fast forward button) by pressing it 6 times. (4) Press the play button once (5) Scroll down once (againโ€ฆ

Excellent except for batteries

I use a voice recorder in college to record lectures and lessons and am very happy with the quality and features of the DM 20. I teach in rooms up to 40ft x 20' and shot in HQ mode. My prof ranges from screams to murmurs, and even at 30 feet the recorder picks up the murmurs clearly (after I set the noise reduction function to maximum). I wanted to buy the DM 10 but 8 hours of high quality recording beat the price difference. I would highly recommend the DM Series to anyone. The reason I didn't

Not crystal clear but decent quality

I bought this unit for grad school after learning a tape recorder (a holdover from my college days) and a Belkin iPod tape recorder (new technology not even worth the few bucks that I paid for) had tried on eBay). The tape recorder is still of decent quality but is no longer digital. Tapes are currently cumbersome to purchase, store, and organize. The Belkin iPod recorder was very sensitive to positioning with terrible recording quality. I've been using the DM-20 to record lectures for about 3โ€ฆ

Spend more for quality and reliability

I started with an Olympus DM-10 DVR and used it daily to record college lectures which I turned into CDs to listen to on my daily commute. The DM-10 met my needs quite well, and I particularly appreciated the voice control feature, which cut actual recording time (and therefore playback time) in half. I really liked this model, although sometimes due to lack of space I had to download and clear the memory. Unfortunately I either lost mine or it was stolen. :-(After 6 weeks of searching for myโ€ฆ
