Great Value - Compact SLR

I bought this kit (E-510 plus two lenses included) not because it was 'best in class' (it wasn't) but because I thought it was the best appeared in terms of value for money. (focus on landscapes, recreation, people; not sports or formal portraits). The price of this outfit went from $1,000 to $620 in less than a year and a half. When Olympus introduced the modified E-520, the 510 was old hat. An example of excellent (but not cutting edge) technology that has been heavily devalued. As for the…

Best value DSLR available today

This camera ticks all the boxes of the description and more. If you are searching and shopping for your first DSLR, stop now and buy this camera. Thought of waiting for 520 but the only new features I noticed on mfg. The site had "redesigned controls for people with certain types of color blindness" and the ability to remotely control flashes, neither of which I need. The photos I've taken with this camera over the past few weeks have more than justified the cost and I'm glad I didn't miss out…

Great in many ways

I love shooting with this camera! This is exactly what I needed to take my photography skills to the next level. The lenses in the kit are surprisingly good and light, qualities that don't often come together in one lens. That's fast even compared to the best P&S cameras (I had a Canon S3 IS before). IS in the body is a nice feature so I don't have to buy more expensive lenses to get this feature. The JPEG white balance seems a bit off (too much white by default) so I just shoot in RAW which…

From Olympus 500 to Olympus 510

I recently bought the 510 after owning the 500 for about 2 years - although I was pleased to have the LiveView feature - I was comfortable with the Functionality not satisfied. If I do something wrong! When using Live View, the camera does not introduce itself before recording. If I instead point the camera at the subject and press the shutter button halfway (which would be the normal way to focus), the camera doesn't do anything, instead you have to press the shutter button all the way down…

Post Photo Disappointing

I bought this camera in 2007 with a 2 lens kit for $665. Since I'm using a lighter and less complicated semi-professional camera, I haven't used it in a long time, so I've gone back to classes and have a lot more time to devote to this hobby. There are more than enough reviews here, on Revain, and on the web in general that describe both the camera's disadvantages and its strengths, so I won't repeat all of this information. I really like the pics.RAW transform. Keep in mind that there are some

If you're considering switching to a DSLR.

I've never seen a need for a DSLR. I've been perfectly happy with a quality compact camera like the Canon SD800IS that I've shot with. I figured the DSLR was so big and bulky that I wouldn't want to take it with me to shoot, defeating the purpose of getting it in the first place. Everything changed with the birth of our son, when my grandfather offered us an Olympus E-510 DSLR as an "encouragement" to photograph his grandson well. Many other photo review sites offer very detailed and positive…
