Hardwood is hard but quite irregular in shape. So when you chisel softer metals, the surface can take on the same uneven shape. Pop up. This is probably the worst wooden mandrel I've ever seen (it wasn't homemade).

I like this mandrel. I've used this so many times to reshape bracelets that were dented, damaged or bent. You'll need to use a rubber mallet and start with a light touch, depending on the density of your material, so knowing how to use it properly is important. This is something that will last a lifetime.
