Too big is probably best for those with thick hair. The tie around the hood is very tight (make sure your ears don't get tucked under the tie when you go to bed - it will hurt when you wake up). If I had known everything that is now before I bought it, I wouldn't have bothered to find a much smaller hood.

I bought this hat because of the price and while it does the job I wouldn't recommend it. The material description says "satin" but it's a cheap polyester fabric that I find too coarse to hold and protect my hair. Also the stitching was poorly done, the elastic was visible after my first wash.
