This is the second rod I have bought for my home. Home Depot sells Hunter down rods for its Hampton Bay fans, which are threaded and add play to the fan. Progress Lighting's lower shaft is snug and unthreaded, and set screws prevent additional movement, making it easier to balance the fan. The last fan I installed was in my patio, when the installation was complete I didn't even have to balance the fan, it was perfect.
