Ideal for connecting to any device with a DB9 socket

I bought this product because it has the correct connector and because it uses an FTDI chip. FTDI makes the most reliable USB-to-Serial chips and have reliable drivers. For newer versions of Windows, drivers are actually available through Windows Update. Carefully mark the polarity of the DB9 connector on this device. This product has a male end and screws for attachment to a female connector with matching screw holes. This is in contrast to many similar USB-to-serial converters, which insteadโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Brilliantly finished
Cons
  • Not everything fits

This adapter solved my problem connecting two old HP graphing calculators to my Windows 7 Pro x64 workstation. I tried using the built in serial port on my Gigabyte EP45-UD3L but it didn't work. The calculators continued to report an invalid command, which meant that the data was not received correctly. I had two choices: use a very old laptop with RS-232, or buy a USB to RS232 adapter. After a quick search I found this adapter had a pretty high rating for a reasonable price (lower than eBay)โ€ฆ

Easy to install, doesn't work for our application

I originally bought this to use with a Microtech controller. They had a special cable to connect the controller's serial port to the software on the laptop. It's running at a low baud rate and this device couldn't reach that baud rate so the ECU would just drop the connection. 2 seconds or so. As is the case with any old interface. YMMV honestly. The product itself was easy to set up, but getting it up and running can be challenging depending on the application.

Genuine FTDI chip easily recognizable

Used to connect an old Meade 12" LX200GPS Schmitt Casssigrain telescope. Clean connection to a computer. A cheap fake from another seller is sold not recognized No matter what I do, this adapter has allowed me to update the firmware and control the telescope from my laptop NOTE: For the LX200 series, you still need another cable to go from the 9-pin serial number to the input on to reach the telescope

I am having difficulty trying to connect an AEM Wideband output sensor to my laptop to capture my 2011 WRX data for the tuning ECU to log. Initially I had a cheap cable with "Prolific" chipset. It didn't work so I bought this cable with "FTDI" chipset and it works fine. I didn't even have to look for a driver! I just plugged the cable into my laptop for setup, he installed it and set everything up. Once this was complete I connected the RS-232 side to my broadband cable and the USB to myโ€ฆ

Fixes a recurring problem.

I use a lot of USB to serial cables and they seem to solve a very common problem. Most USB-to-serial cables usually have non-detachable screw sleeves with internal threads. That's fine as long as you don't want to plug them directly into a device that also has "tappers". The connectors then get in the way and you have to use another short cable to connect them together, adding to the cost and another potential point of failure, especially since most connectors cannot be removed withoutโ€ฆ

Solid communication cable for PLC and HMI applications.

I've tried Belkin and they didn't work. The Keyspan adapters worked great, but after Tripp Lite bought them, they stopped updating drivers and the device doesn't work with 64-bit Win 7 Pro machines. I spent hours trying to get one of these to work last week, but the lack of driver support sent them to the dump. In addition to the wasted hours getting this to work, it cost me another 10 hours of driving and two extra nights in a hotel to complete the job. Before leaving the site last week Iโ€ฆ
