I was hesitant to try these filters after reading some of the reviews but I'm so happy I gave them a try! I actually like them better than my Brita filters (although they were "old style" as I usually buy in bulk and haven't tried new ones yet). I do not know why the negative reviews. We have very hard water and they work exactly like a Brita filter, the soaking instructions are exactly the same as Brita, the water isn't metallic gray or tastes funny, yes they have a band around them to make a seal, it worked great on my britafilter there is no leakage. I am not happy with the Sapphire replacement filters (I use them in the classic Brita jug) because they are so cheap. But I thought it might be helpful to mention that I really doubt they filter as well as the original Brita filters.
