I bought this sharpening plate to be able to sharpen and level the spine of wood planes. This is the first diamond plate I've tried. I have used water stones for most of my life. The first iron went great. He quickly got the hang of smoothing the back of the iron with 400 grit, flipping the plate over and finishing with 1000 grit. I was impressed how well it worked. "Stone" became smooth on both sides (Scandinavian sharpening) after the third MoraKnife stainless steel I sharpened with it. This is great value -Relationship. There are 2 things to mention about it, it's not exactly flat. Mine has a cut out in one of the corners on one side, but the rest of the stone is flat on both sides. You cannot use liquids to make sharpening easier. It's in the ad description. what stinks Diamonds are held in place with glue and are unlikely to withstand any liquid, including liquids specifically formulated for honing.
