Do they have to hang from a loop at the end? No, they are everywhere and do not work properly. Terrible design. We ended up mounting ours onto a piece of wood and then painting it to match. These are really cheap fans of very poor quality. I use them to cool an upstairs studio room where it gets hot and humid, they work well for that, but I wouldn't try to ventilate the room with them.
