Excellent read, very helpful for setting up my first fish tank

This book helped me set up my first fish tank. This was a great resource and I would recommend it to anyone who knows little to nothing about fish and setting up an aquarium. Very thorough, although sometimes it seems tedious. If you follow the basics outlined in this book, you will have a successful tank. I've had mine set up for a while now and it works great with the instructions in this book!

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Some problems

Excellent "Easy " manual

I am new to the hobby and needed a manual that would give me enough information to get started without a lot of irrelevant details or secret information. I feel like this guide gave me the knowledge I needed to get my first tank up and running. On the other hand, the text repeated itself ad nauseam, the main points repeated over and over again. I get how one hammers important information into your head, but the way this guide is written is to basically say the same thing three times in…

  • Confident

Very informative but doesn't mention fish circuit

I really enjoyed referencing this book when setting up my first 55 gallon aquarium. Boruchowitz writes in a friendly, funny tone while remaining informative. I particularly appreciate the placement ideas - he listed several groups of fish that 1) will not overpopulate your aquarium, 2) usually coexist peacefully, and 3) are suitable for novice aquarists. Definitely helps in the planning phase. The only thing I disagree with is his method of cycling. However, the book was written in 01, so 13…

My Favorite Fish Care Book

This book is a wonderful and easy-to-read resource for anyone interested in setting up an aquarium. I read it cover to cover. I often refer to it as "my fish bible"! I have loaned this book to friends who have solved common aquarium problems and they have also found it extremely helpful. The purpose of the book is to give you a lot of information BEFORE you buy an aquarium and fish. This will help you avoid common mistakes. However, this book is an excellent resource or "refresher course" for…

The best book for beginner aquarists!

I had no idea where to start. 24 years old, new apartment, all my life there have been only dogs. I couldn't get a dog so I decided to buy an aquarium as the pet store had aquariums and aquarium supplies for sale. I had no idea where to start and what to take. So I did what any smart person does, I researched what to do with the experts. just a pinpointed instruction on what kind of fish to get or what setup is best. I read the book cover to cover on a trip from Chicago, Illinois to Columbia…

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Obsolete model

This book is a must for beginners!

I would have liked to have read this book before setting up my first aquarium! Of the 40 fish I bought, 8 died within the first 2 weeks. This book taught me that you can't always rely on the integrity of your local pet store. Pet shops sometimes want to get rid of unwanted pets and can take advantage of your lack of knowledge. Reading books about caring for fish and setting up your first aquarium is far more important than relying on your pet store's advice. For example, the pet store told me…

Pros

Some great features to start with but needs some improvement

My wife and I bought this book at a pet store along with a 29 gallon starter kit. It might have been better to read the book first, but I was lucky my kit (all glass kit with Tetra components) was fine. I like the For Dummies books, I looked through the For Dummies book, but this one won me over with its colorful photographs, but written in almost the same style as For Dummies: cartoons at the beginning of the chapters, legends in the margins, writing in a friendly way. style etc. If you are…
