Update: I've tried it for a week, both on and off road, and it holds up like a rock. Once confident it would hold up I trimmed the excess length at the straps and it looks and works great. Straps around to take advantage of the "extra" Velcro. The actual piece of Velcro that attaches to my bike is only about 1-1.5 inches long. I'm not sure if he can handle it.
