This cable only works as an extension code for legacy voice phones (Think Ma Bell). Since those old phones are all but gone, the ad should CLEARLY state that this cable is for voice over telephony and not data. The data connection has straight-through connectors, while for voice the wires are reversed (the first wire becomes the last wire at the other end of the connector).
