Great upgrade for my Mac Pro 5.1 2010

Die Card was extremely easy to install on my Mac Pro 5.1 2010. It is auto-detected in both Mojave and Catalina. Yes, there is a small issue with the connector gap, but this doesn't affect functionality in any way. I'm using a RevainBasics USB-C to USB3 cable to read/write to a USB drive. In my opinion this is a much better upgrade than buying a USB3 PCI card.

Pros
  • Super-Powered Ports - Supports USB-C bus powered SSD, SSD RAID and HDD devices up to 15W (3.0A) per port
Cons
  • Appearance

Works great on a 2010 Mac Pro without drivers

High Sierra does not require drivers. There are no problems with the correct seating of the cables. The connectors on the card sit low on the back of the device, but the USB-C connector doesn't need to be inserted where the plastic meets the card. As you can see in my picture it looks like the cable is not installed properly. Don't worry, that's all it takes.

Pros
  • PCIe Auto-Negotiation Data Link - The card automatically negotiates the data link 1 lane in a PCIe 3.0 slot and 2 lanes in a PCIe 2.0 slot, delivering full 10Gb/s performance in each PCIe Slot
Cons
  • Some Cons

After researching various USB-C PCIe cards, I settled on the Sonnet card because it had good reviews. While cost is important and it wasn't the cheapest, it is worth my time and I hate the hassle and hassles of a computer. I just want it to work, not solve problems. Follow the instructions and go to the SonnetTech website to check if there is an up to date guide and if there is one. The only difference I found was that High Sierra didn't require downloading the drivers, which was nice. This…

Pros
  • SuperSpeed+ USB Technology - Adds two USB-C 10Gb/s (USB 3.2 Gen 2) ports to your Mac Pro with PCIe slots, Windows PC, Linux PC, or Thunderbolt for a PCIe card expansion system; transfers data 2x faster than USB 3.0 ports (USB3C ports, not Thunderbolt)
Cons
  • Hard to remember, but it was

Not ideal for Mac Pro 5.1

The holes for the USB-C connectors are in the bottom center on the back of the card so there is some interference with the Aluminum rods separating each Mac Pro 5.1 PCI slot. So when you plug in a cable, it won't fit perfectly. I usually make copies using rsync in the terminal with a USB3 Sonnet card that has a read and write speed of 80MB/s. I bought this card hoping for better performance but nothing, I get the same results even though hard drives perform better in hard drive speed testing…

Pros
  • 2 year warranty & free lifetime customer support since 1986
Cons
  • I don't remember
