This is truly a 5 star lens

Rated 4 stars because Revain asked for auto focus, image stabilization and portrait. Well, this is a lens based on older technology, so autofocus can be slow and noisy. That's not to say it's terrible, it's more of a MACRO lens, so the MF is the way to go. Now the IS feature isn't a big deal for the old A-mount, mainly because A-mount cases offer IBIS. Finally for use in portrait mode. You can use it for that purpose, but it's not really meant for that as its primary purpose. Indeed it is a 5…

Pros
  • Focus range limiter speeds up auto focus response; Focus lock button gives you full control
Cons
  • Very Expensive

This is an exceptionally sharp lens that gives a very good perspective of 100mm on FF or 150mm on an APS-C sensor body like the Sony A 77/77II. It's basically a five star lens, especially if you drop the aperture down a bit to F4, but I give it four stars for its yaw and noisy motor (see cons). Call me fussy or just spoiled by new lenses like the amazing Sony 16-50 2.8. Pros: 1) Extremely sharp, fairly sharp wide open, but once you get to F4-F8 it's sharp across the entire frame.

Pros
  • Measures 3" in diameter and 4" in length; weighs 1 lb 2 oz
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than others

Sophisticated specialty lens

This is my fifth Sony lens purchase. I always buy cheaper brands like Sigma but inevitably go back to Sony. At the very least, I expect the Sony a65 firmware to fix many of the lens' minor flaws. Reading the reviews I have the feeling that Sony lenses are a bit better, but I've never tested other brands to be sure. I can say that I have never been disappointed with Sony lenses. I've been thinking about a true macro lens for a while, but was also very hesitant to buy one because I wasn't sure I…
