I wouldn’t buy it again

I bought this for something to do on a rainy day with my kids. I didn’t know it was kind of a dangerous process or at least it seems so with all the warning in the instructions. Also, maybe I missed it in the description but we had to buy distilled water in order to do this. I know distilled water isnt expensive but it was just another thing to get at the store. We haven’t even actually done this project yet because of all the warnings.

Pros
  • Encourages creativity and imagination
Cons
  • The kit cannot be re-used for future projects

You'll end up growing white crystals.if they work.

Crytal kits are notoriously iffy - sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't - and even the same kit will work sometimes, and not others. It has to be perfect, and I mean really perfect, for them to work at all.For us, we ended up with crystals on only the base of the unicorn's tail and mane, and not on the tips (go figure). Those crystals are white or clear, and they look exactly like what they are - white crystals on a colored unicorn - not pink and blue crystals as the image on the box…

Pros
  • August 1, 2019
Cons
  • The cost is too high for what is included in the kit

Didn't work and not worth the effort!

This is not a craft or project, it's a commitment. We followed the instructions to the letter. Had to go to the store to get everything you need b/c you have to use distilled water or it won't work. It's a several day, multi-step project and even after following all of the instructions, no crystals ever grew. We were super disappointed. We did multiple of these kits (Unicorn, fox, dragon, and narwhal) and none of them worked. Overall, it wasn't worth it and it's really not educational b/c they…

Pros
  • Includes both craft and science components, combining education and fun
Cons
  • The finished product is not as pretty as expected

Growing a unicorn in lockdown!

My purchase isn't verified because I didn't buy it on ebay I bought it for a buck at Ross cuz the package was ripped open. But look at the proof in the pictures! My unicorn is GLORIOUS! We did have to grow her two times -the first time the crystals grew on the jar. but all you have to do is heat the liquid back up and start again. KLUTZ really should have had a list on the package of all the extra ingredients you had to buy, i was lucky that I had all of them laying around the house.

Pros
  • Learn about crystal structures and the science behind their formation
Cons
  • The kit is not suitable for younger children without adult supervision

Lots of additional items are needed.

This kit is not complete as it arrived. There are quite a few items that are needed from home and the store.I personally don’t have distilled water on hand. You also need to cut the pipe cleaner into pieces for the different time parts of the unicorn. When looking at this online I thought that the crystals were different colors, but actually it’s just the pipe cleaners that are different colors and the crystals are all white.I’ll update once we are able to get the crystals going.

Pros
  • Klutz Press
Cons
  • The crystals do not hold their shape and break easily

Fun, education project with some drawbacks

My daughter and I had fun and learned from this project, which takes at least three days and requires some materials from home that you may or may not have on hand. In particular, you're supposed to have two glass jars with lids that are big enough to accommodate the unicorn. We found we only needed one, as the second jar is necessary only if you're saving your "seeding solution" for future use. The booklet never explained why you need two solutions if the seeding and growing solution use the…

Pros
  • Easy-to-follow instructions with helpful diagrams
Cons
  • The molds are difficult to clean and reuse

Not enough positives on this one

Fun looking on the box, and fun to do a craft together with a kiddo. However, you do need some things not in the box (e.g., distilled water), and and the crystal growth was minimal. I see others made it work, so it's possible it was user error, but seeing other user errors throughout the reviews, I'd say you get a 50-50 shot on this one. I'd pass.

Pros
  • 5 x 1.5 x 9 inches
Cons
  • The colors of the materials are not as vibrant as shown on the packaging

Follow the directions to the letter!

(and hope for the best). As others have explained, this is sort of hit or miss. You need lots of other supplies. My little and I had fun doing this, and she's super fond of unicorns, and we got to talk a little about crystals abd how they work.

Pros
  • Teaches children about crystals and how they form
Cons
  • The instructions are poorly translated and contain grammatical errors

Doesn't work - my new review

It's a neat idea, and my daughter and I had fun following the instructions, but the end product is nothing like the pictures on the box. There are no rainbow colored crystals, only white crystals on colored pipe cleaners.

Pros
  • K835524
Cons
  • The projects take too long to complete

Revainrating 2 out of 5

does not come with everything you need

Beware, not only does this not come with everything you need, you also need multiple days to make. My kids and I just dont have that kind of time. We wanted something that we could do during one sitting

Pros
  • Learning & Education
Cons
  • The glitter causes irritation and allergic reactions for some people

All you need is a jar and water!

The Klutz Grow Your Own Crystal Unicorn includes everything you need to grow crystals, except the jar and water. Cute little pink unicorn body is ready for you to shape the pipe cleaners into a mane and tail, mix the crystal powder, let set and watch your crystals grow. A rainbow backdrop is also included!

Pros
  • Fun to do with my daughter . Steam class
Cons
  • The instructions are confusing and hard to follow

Fun Crafts Kit on my review.

This grow your own crystal unicorn set is a fun way to entertain your kids, and yourself. The kit came with everything needed to grow the crystals on your unicorn. It was fun watching the crystals take shape. This is a fun way to have a nice arts and crafts time/science experiment.

Pros
  • This was for a 9 year old girl. She loved it!
Cons
  • The glitter tends to get everywhere and is difficult to clean up

Grow Crystals - my new review

The entire unicorn isn't going to be crystals - but you grow crystals ON the unicorn. This is a small cheap short term project that will make little kids super exited to watch the crystals grow. Great cheap little science project

Pros
  • Perfect for a rainy day activity
Cons
  • The science experiments are too difficult for younger children to understand

Revainrating 4 out of 5

didn't work out well for us - might have done something wrong

probably it was me. I did something wrong. We got the unicorn to get dipped and collect it's first seeding. From there, we got no additional growth. Bummer.

Pros
  • Builds confidence in children as they learn and create
Cons
  • The science experiments do not align with current scientific understanding

Disappointing on my review.

The concept is a neat one, but it doesn't really work. I did get small crystals to grow, although they are a bit yellow. Probably because I used tap water instead of distilled.I did put blue food coloring in the water, but the color mostly stuck to the plastic and not the crystals. Also, the tail would not stay attached no matter what I did.

Pros
  • Includes all necessary materials for the project
Cons
  • The finished product is flimsy and not sturdy enough to be displayed

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really nice kit. for my opinion

One of the best grow your own crystal kits I've ever done. The crystals are a good size and solid. They aren't as colorful as the picture seems and the instructions are long but super worth it. (Picture in a case, does NOT come with the case).

Pros
  • Promotes fine motor skills
Cons
  • The materials included do not last long enough to complete all the projects

Revainrating 1 out of 5

No crystals for my opinion

I followed the instructions but it never grew any crystals. It's also really small. My daughter was really disappointed.

Pros
  • Kid enjoyed it.
Cons
  • Total mess. Followed instructions exactly. Looks terrible

Beautiful! best in my review

This came out better than expected. I was reading some bad reviews that it did not work but it does! Takes a few days but my 6 year old loved doing it and the finished project is great!

Pros
  • This is a fun and cute project. Perfect for filling in time with. My kids liked doing this.
Cons
  • The materials included are not enough to complete all the projects

Cute but difficult unicorn toy

When I was a little girl I always wanted a crystal growing kit but my mother said no and now I can understand why. This kit is a cute idea but it's difficult to make and it needs supplies not included in the box. I would only buy this kit for older kids who love science.

Pros
  • Makes a great gift for young ones
Cons
  • The finished product is not as unique as promised

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works well but doesn’t keep well

If you follow the instructions, it works. However, you can’t really preserve it. Maybe they should include institutions how to do that? My kids loved this stocking stuffer. We had both the unicorn and narwhal. However, the crystals become yellow very quickly, so it’s not a keepsake. Renders it useless.

Pros
  • 8 - 13 years
Cons
  • The finished product is not as impressive as expected
