I bought these after having owned and loved a Spyderco Ultrafine 3X8 workbench for some time. I wanted a stone I could take from the store to my office and use clean that cuts faster than ultra thin to restore duller edges. Good stone. It's not flat enough for the back of the chisel, at least not the entire back. Although it works very well for carving tools. Woodcarving tools apply a lot of pressure to a small area when sharpening, so oilstone, Arkansas, diamond, or ceramic are best choices. Waterstones are too soft for carving tools and score easily. These Spyderco stones are great. I have all three, medium, thin and ultra thin. I would say they are best for experienced sharpeners. Neither of them are particularly aggressive, so you might get frustrated trying to bring back a very dull knife. You will want to add something more aggressive to your kit.
