Looks high quality and connects at advertised speed.

First of all, the hard drive connected to this Startech hard drive docking station has always been the limiting factor in transfer speeds as long as it is connected to a USB 3.1 port. I like having the power button on top of the front dock and it's very stable even when using a heavy hard drive. I don't find it easier to eject the hard drive from the slot than not to use it.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • Slightly dented

As soon as announced.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, true USB 3.1 Gen 2 data transfer speeds. It's well built and comes with five different plugs for different parts of the world. My only gripe is that it only comes with a Type A USB cable. It would be nice if they also included a Type-C cable. I already had one so no big deal but it would be nice to include both types as other similar products have done. But other than that minor omission, this is the best docking station I've ever used. Roughly double…

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • A newer model could have been chosen

Perfect for hard drive accessories

I had a previous model of this fan dock but it was only USB 2.0 and I seem to have had major problems with my new PC which all had USB 3.1 ports. . So I bought this hoping it would be more compatible and it is. It works as it should. I'm a small fan, but modern drives and SSDs are so weak that they only stay cool outdoors. I have no problem inserting discs as another reviewer mentioned. 3.5" or 2.5" fit without problems. Also, StarTech support was very quick and helpful when I was trying to fix

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • old

I recently purchased several USB 3.1 docking stations from Amazon: two of this model, a BlacX model and a couple of replacement devices. All three devices run on tested drives up to 8.0 TB. I like the BlacX device best. The cheapest refills are on the back for easier access to the switches, and the lack of an assistive eject button irritates arthritic hands. The Star Tech block is by far the most difficult to insert and lock the disc into place. I usually have to play with it and I'm afraid of…

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Some minor issues

Note cable length for full speed connection

Note that cable length is likely limited to 1m when using USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps speeds that is provided by this docking station. charged for. In fact, I couldn't find a USB cable rated at 10Gb/s longer than 1m, let alone the full-size Type-B connector required for use with this docking station. The product comes with a 1m Type A to Type B cable. As far as I know, this cable length limitation is a USB limitation and not a limitation of this product. Consider this and the limitations of dock…

Pros
  • Nice to use
Cons
  • Good but not great

Can't connect SSDs via USB 3.1 Gen 2

Let me start by loving StarTech hardware. I've used their hard drive docks, cables, network racks, etc. for years. Unfortunately, this USB 3.1 (10Gb/s) single bay dock from StarTech.com isn't ready for mainstream use. I bought it with high hopes for fast data transfer through my desktop's USB 3.1 Gen 2 or 10Gbps port. The docking station is normally connected to a computer running Windows 10 Pro. When copying to a 3.5" Seagate Exos 8TB corporate hard drive, I had no problems copying large files
