I want the side of the tip to be smooth. Both sides have grip grooves. With a knurled handle, the light passes through the bottom of the vial. If one side was smooth, you can easily do this with a flashlight when the spirit level fully touches the two pin holes.

This is great! Much faster than traditional two-hole pens. And they also have a grippy exterior for a better grip when wet or tight, which is a great design. They've been used and abused, and they stand up to the torment well. I would definitely recommend and buy again.
