My students use them to leave on their desks when they need to go to the bathroom. That way we don't have to talk about them going to the bathroom. You're not interrupting class to ask me, and you should be back before time runs out. They've survived a lot of falls and seem pretty accurate.

No 15 timers will give you the same elapsed time. They range from 4 minutes to 8 minutes. Before using them I knew they wouldn't be accurate because no two timers have the same amount of sand. You have to make an effort to see the sand actually move from one end to the other. If you need an accurate time, or even a fairly accurate time, this isn't for you.

I clocked each hourglass individually, and the time varied from 4.5 to 6.5 minutes (I wrote the time with a marker on each one to keep track). Some of them got stuck and didn't let the sand through all the way, so I had to throw them out. Another fell off the table and broke immediately (this is my fault of course, but they are fragile!). If you are looking for a lot of timers at an affordable price and don't need exactly 5 minutes, then this is a good choice.

I ordered a set of 15 five minute timers. When I opened the package, I immediately saw that the timers were not checked for quality. Some of the bases are not glued flat so the timers are not perfectly vertical. Also, several timers had moisture clearly visible and were sealed inside, making these timers completely useless as sand does not flow.
