Encryption bottleneck practical example Synology

Summary. When using this device with Synology-encrypted shared folders for exceptionally large file transfers, there is a slight speed advantage over 5GbE or 10GbE, but once you start using thousands of real-world file transfers, the benefits wear off. Our use case for Synology is a typical laptop archive storage limited to 2TB of onboard storage. We recently added a 10GBE card (Synology 10Gb Ethernet Adapter 1). RJ45 connector (E10G18-T1)) to connect our DS1817+ directly to non-Thunderbolt…

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Available in white only

The equipment is perfect. The software needs improvement.

Mixed feelings. The hardware is perfect - everything works out of the box with 2 Samsung Enterprise Class 2210 drives, but very little increase in performance with daily use. Only settings that toggle "skip serial I/O" on or off respectively. Very little actual performance improvement over the no-cache setup. Installed in DS1819+ and mainly used for Plex, Moments, Computer Backup and Monitoring Station. I didn't notice much improvement in these apps' boot speeds or less disk access - the same…

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Style 90

I bought this and it didn't work on my particular Synology NAS model so I thought hmm let's let's try it on my Asus z490 PC with Windows 10. And I'm very happy. Here's a tip: with 2 cards and 4 NVMe I get 10,000 MB/s. Check out the attached AS SSD and CrystalDiskMark NVMe performance chart. Without drivers, 2 NVMe hard drives show up fine in Windows 10, but for the Acquantia NIC chip to work you need to use the following driver: Driver: Marvell Acquantia AQC107 driver (v2.1.21.0 in my case)…

This card is hot!

So I bought this card for a non-Synology use case and as with the others, all components (10Gbe and m.2 slots) are recognized with no issues. The only thing I see as a problem is the cooling. Since it was designed for a specific Synology case, it has heatsinks designed for specific cooling. I don't think this happens on a normal motherboard and case without active cooling of the PCIe slots, and the temperature reaches the "can't touch that" level even when idle. I believe this burned one of my…

  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

10 Gbe and nvme disk caching - this is what I've been waiting for!

I didn't like the fact that my Synology NAS only had one PCIe slot, which until the release of this adapter card forced me to choose between using 10Gbe or SSD drive caching with my NAS. I've been connecting my home to 10Gbe for a few years now, so I've been waiting for this card to be released so I can finally get 10GBe and SSD caching to maximize my NAS's speeds. The card did not disappoint me. Installation was easy - it took less than 10 minutes to transfer NVME SSD storage from the old card

Pros
  • Pretty packaging
Cons
  • Annoying

No plug-n-play with Windows 10 Pro and no Synology drivers.

Technically supported only for Synology. But that's not why most people end up here on Amazon. Win10 Pro recognizes the driver but cannot find it. It's not plug-n-play and the Synology website doesn't even offer driver support. For this to work you need to download the Aquantia drivers from Dell or another vendor that uses the same chip. 2 stars because it's just an overpriced generic card and you get a faulty product from Synology. You should not buy this, but get another brand with the same…

Pros
  • Suitable for many
Cons
  • Brief manual

I'm glad I bought this!

The price is a bit high, but it was necessary to upgrade to 10GB. I move large files all the time and this has breathed new life into my NAS! The DS1621+ only has four gigabit ports. It is a bit slow when moving files larger than 100GB. If your network switch doesn't meet the requirements, you gain nothing by adding it to your NAS. You have selected Netgear MS510TX for 10GB port, it has two 5GB ports, two 2.5GB ports and four 1GB ports. Oh, it also has a 10GB SFP port. Although I'm not that…

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
