Support out of the box in Ubuntu 20.04

10GB card registered as "AQC107 NBase-T/IEEE 802.3bz Ethernet Controller [AQtion]" in Ubuntu 20.04. No driver settings or driver installation are required to run it immediately after installation. I'll update this review in a few weeks once the rest of the network has been updated to test 10GB.

Pros
  • Large selection
Cons
  • Makes me nervous

10 Gbe and nvme disk caching - this is what I've been waiting for!

I didn't like the fact that my Synology NAS only had one PCIe slot, which forced me between using 10Gbe or SSD disk caching with my NAS until the release of this adapter card to choose. I've been connecting my home to 10Gbe for a few years now, so I've been waiting for this card to be released so I can finally get 10GBe and SSD caching to maximize my NAS's speeds. The card did not disappoint me. Installation was easy - it took less than 10 minutes to transfer NVME SSD storage from the old cardโ€ฆ

The equipment is perfect. The software needs improvement.

Mixed feelings. The hardware is perfect - everything works out of the box with 2 Samsung Enterprise Class 2210 drives, but very little increase in performance in everyday use. Wright and read-only settings, each with "skip serial I/O" on or off. Very little performance improvement in real life compared to a cache-free setup. Installed in DS1819+ and mainly used for Plex, Moments, Computer Backup and Monitoring Station. I didn't notice much improvement in these apps' boot speeds or less diskโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Brings joy
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

NAS locks up for 24 hours under load

I bought 2 DS2419+ NAS with 2 of these adapters to get 10GB and caching. 1 of 2 adapters works fine. Another blocks the NAS within 24 hours. To confirm, I swapped out the cards, memory and M2 modules to isolate the problem on the card. As a test, I'm using a 6.7 TB photo and video collection. At first it works fine, everything is fine, and then at some point in the process, maybe 4 hours, maybe 24 hours, the NAS locks up and all drive lights come on. DSM loses connection and you cannot returnโ€ฆ

Real case of Synology with encryption bottlenecks

Summary. If you're only using this with Synology with encrypted shared folders for large file transfers, there's a limit to the higher speed benefits that 5Gbe or 10Gbe offer, but once you start using thousands of file transfers in the real world, the benefits wear off after. Our use case for Synology is a typical laptop archive storage with limited onboard storage of 2TB. We recently added a 10GbE card (Synology 10Gb Ethernet Adapter, 1 RJ45 port (E10G18-T1)) to connect our DS1817+ via USB 3.0

Pros
  • Designed and engineered for maximum performance and reliability of Synology servers
Cons
  • Doubtful
