This thickness gauge is accurate and consistent.

We tested this unit on several classic cars in the shop and were particularly impressed with the consistent and fast results. The external sensor is a great feature as it allows customers to hold the device while I demonstrate differences in paint thickness on their cars. However, if you are interested in classic cars, this is a fantastic tool. An interesting sensor that could definitely be useful for color, although I don't know how accurate it is.

I chose this to measure the thickness of the clear coat and laminate on some of the tables I have in my garage because I am renovating and restoring them. The meter works and is easy to use. However, I don't really know how accurate it is as I can't compare this as I don't have another such sensor. Based on the thickness I see at eye level and what I can measure on this one chart; that seems pretty accurate. I'm satisfied because I used it for what I need it for.

Handy paint thickness gauge

It works right out of the box and has the great advantage that it works automatically with both magnetic (steel) and non-magnetic (aluminium) metal substrates. However, the high resolution of 0.001 mil doesn't mean you can measure thin paint or other non-conductive films! The calibration depends on the thickness of the substrate or base metal, which is fixed at about 40 mils and only at room temperature, so readings are not repeated for paint thicknesses less than about 1 mil.
