It works right out of the box and has the great advantage that it works automatically with both magnetic (steel) and non-magnetic (aluminium) metal substrates. However, the high resolution of 0.001 mil doesn't mean you can measure thin paint or other non-conductive films! The calibration depends on the thickness of the substrate or base metal, which is fixed at about 40 mils and only at room temperature, so readings are not repeated for paint thicknesses less than about 1 mil. However, it's a great all-around method. Tool for most applications and the price/performance ratio is acceptable. I recommend the variant with a separate sensor head instead of a built-in device.
