I had to shorten one of them, he sawed off a hacksaw, then a file, even the whetstone barely touched the surface. I had to heat it to a cherry red color with a flashlight to remove the heat treatment and then I was finally able to cut it. For my use, the lack of a heat treat isn't a problem, but if you need to trim it down, you might want to look at a stick instead.
