Description of ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Winsor & Newton Artists' Picture Cleaner - 75ml (3221735)

A natural resin/oil emulsion containing ammonia designed for cleaning varnished paintings. It works by dissolving linseed oil oxidation and will remove surface dirt and the products of oxidation in the old varnish. Note that a picture that needs to have old varnish removed should be entrusted to a competent picture restorer. Batch colour and settlement may vary.

Great price and the only kind of turpentine.

Great Price, the only type of turpentine you can buy if you are a serious artist. I have been painting professionally for over 40 years (Tempestportraits.com).

Good item goes slow

Did a good job eliminating the white spots on my oil painting. The smell was very strong, I had to use a mask. I didn't like using cotton swabs, I found a clean 100% t-shirt was better than cotton. The bottle was very small, I need to buy another one to complete the cleaning. My painting was 24x30.

Spring Cleaning Oil Painting

We used this product on an 18th century oil painting. The bottom half looked stained with something white. We couldn't find any cotton, so we used high quality cotton pads, lightly soaked them with the product and lightly smoothed them over the entire portrait. Not only white coating and dust disappeared, the colors in the picture became brighter. Looks great, took 15 minutes and is now ready to hang on the wall. It smelled, but nothing overpowering. I was worried the smell would linger but Iโ€ฆ

Works with old patches.

I had to go back 4 times but it removed a very old stain from an oil painting I bought. It looked like coffee or hot cocoa had been spilled. The instructions state that after cleaning, use distilled turpentine to remove excess product. When I did this, the painting started to lose color significantly! So I stopped and reapplied this design, just gently wiping away the excess with a clean cloth. Looks perfect after 3 weeks.

Pros
  • Ammonia-based natural resin oil emulsion for cleaning varnished paintings.
Cons
  • Not sure.

Handles paint stains and oxidation very well

We purchased this product to remove a dirty pink cast from an old 1950's oil painting that was in storage prior to purchase. The photos show the difference and we were very pleased with the ease and affordability of restoring the painting to its true colors. Cleaning with a cotton cloth was a real hassle (I used a thick new cloth diaper we had left over from a burp kit :) and I used the whole bottle as the painting is about 28x40.

Pros
  • Batch color and deposits may vary
Cons
  • Out of fashion

Better than expected for the price

Has this become my 100 year old 'oil painting' of a talented family member but no there Vinci painting" into a shiny new painting, befitting the work of a professional restorer? no But did he easily and safely remove all those decades of grime and grime and make the painting look MUCH better than it was? YES SIR. Some of the results made me chuckle - in our image (which I've been looking at for almost 70 years), the river flows in the middle. But who would have thought that there was a smallโ€ฆ

Pros

Cons
  • Doubtful
