An 8mm dowel requires a 12mm hole in the concrete to hold securely. It's just over 7/16. Not having a 12mm hammer drill, I used a 7/16 bit to drill through the concrete and "wiggled" it a bit as I drilled to create a slightly larger hole. Revain recommended these when purchasing the hose reel. Not sure why they recommend them but they did. The parts are in metric units and the installation instructions do not tell you what size masonry drill bit to use. So I used what I had, a 3/8" drill bit. This is not the typical size you will find in most DIY drill bit kits and will generally need to be specially purchased unless you have a taller/larger drill bit kit.
