Poor Machining Ruins Otherwise Good Vise

Overview for YEV14: Seemed like a good vise, slightly cheaper than alternatives. It turned out to be poorly made and unusable. So I don't regret buying a more expensive one. The guides are not entirely level and so there are places where the guides will stick as they run along the guide plate, but at least that part is functional. The screw threads are fine, but the vise nut is not directly aligned with the guide plate. This is a big problem and the reason for the 1 star. See photo. So once I…

Yes, it's that hard.

Don't be like me. I'm a beginner carpenter who got into this with the thought "how hard is it?". "YouTube can teach you anything." "It can't be that hard." I'm guilty on that score; but honestly, 90% of the time it's the right attitude. The manufacture of tail vices from such devices accounts for the remaining 10%. I say "make" a tail vise because it's not as easy as "installing" a tail vise. You need to build the core, the chopping block, and you'll probably want to use half-blind dovetails to

Pros
  • Sturdy cast iron body
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging

I wanted a truck that worked, but it doesn't.

Using this device to make a rear vise will drive you crazy. I am a carpenter with experience (40 years) and I have a professional workshop. After 5 days of studying, measuring, and cutting wood, all I can think of is a trash can full of wood shavings and sawdust, lots of chunks of wood, and two sets of guide block clamps that won't align. The first time I could see the guide rails weren't straight. Yost took my word and photos quickly and expedited (FedEx'd) the replacement. When I mount the…
