The description says it uses a high quality ALPS 27 potentiometer (blue) and that is actually one of the reasons I decided to order it and why it is more expensive , however after receiving my product I noticed that the volume knob doesn't look like an alps 27 at all so I decided to give it a try and yes my unit comes with a much cheaper ALPS 09 (green). Complete Divorce!

I bought 2 of these and both are gross at a low level. A speaker becomes completely muted or completely unbalanced. Works well at higher levels but useless when I want to listen to quiet music. Clearly Chinese junk. I would pay maybe $10 for it but not $56. So everyone understands, that's a volume control and nothing more. It doesn't connect, they don't have an active circuit. I have it between the DAC and the power amp to control the volume coming from my Toslink Digital TV to the Parasound ZDAC, then to that controller, then the Parasound ZAMP to the passive speakers. The sound does not change in my ears in any way, no coloring. For 50-year-olds it is worth being able to control the volume via the digital output.

This is a very good passive preamp for the price. Sturdy construction, nice big volume knob and silky smooth knobs! The chassis is very strong, but also quite small and light. I was very impressed with this monitor controller and it gave me exactly what I needed. I have a CD player with a vinyl record and a vinyl record with no volume control and this solved the problem.
