Very Well Done: Outside Micrometer

I've been a mechanic for over 40 years and have always used Starret, Brown and Sharp, Mitutoyo, Lufkin but never tried a Fowler. Seems better than other brands. They were there when I started and I didn't buy them because most of us thought they were cheap junk at the time. Very good quality and very well made. Bought 0-1 and 1-2. For the price you can't beat them. I don't look like cheap junk anymore.

Holds micrometers very well

Save money if you're looking for something that can handle tenths of tolerances. This mic was too bulky when taken out of the box. I've disassembled and cleaned of all dirt several times and worked the mic back and forth for hours, but it's still sticky. The only reason it gets 2 stars is the price and it will have a tolerance of +-0.001 inch. If you are a serious machinist, save your money and choose B&S, Starrett or Mitutoyo. The SPI mic was way better than this Fowler.)

Don't expect high quality.

I bought the 1"-2" version cheaply. I bought it because I wanted to replace the metal ratchet with the Mitutoyo mic that comes with the plastic ratchet. The exchange went well and now I also have a cheap second microphone. It repeats well. Build quality is lacking. Good cleaning and lubrication required. feels rough But I didn't expect much. I'm surprised that's actually happening. Bottom line: you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a good microphone, keep looking. If you just want a…
