I haven't been able to get this alone to draw out much liquid. Even though it only holds a vacuum, when I open the release valve I only get a stream of bubbles at the beginning of the hose, even though there is no air in the line. Air can be drawn in through a loose connection on the exhaust valve and tube, or somehow around the back of the exhaust valve.
