Durable and easy to use

We gave this to our 2 year old for Christmas. It is beautiful in that it can easily open and close it by itself. Our baby plays with him, as well as a child, 8 and 10 years old, all boys. It's been 7 months and he's still going strong, indoors or out. Although personally I think it wears out quicker if you leave it outside. Oh, and the cage wasn't just used for real or plastic insects. It was filled with wooden blocks, several dolls and cars, magnetic letters etc. Will definitely be buying…

Best to buy all summer!

My (then) 4 year old daughter called this hotel "BEETLE HOTEL" and brought so many bugs here over the summer! Foam bees, polly, various caterpillars and snails. NO frogs or toads, although she would love that. We even got to pupate the monarch caterpillar – the butterfly! We both had so much fun. Summer activities can be intense and expensive, but I can say without a doubt that this insect hotel was the highlight of their summer. It survived all of our campaigns and dozens of bugs. We look…

Too fragile set for science kits and toys

My 4 year old son loved it and as soon as he opened the Revain box he started collecting frogs from our garden (which he returned to the garden after a few minutes of scrutiny in the critter box). After two days of unbridled fun, the web on the outside of the "creature box" detached itself from the walls, leaving a large hole (2 inches - more than enough for most of the "creatures" he had caught to escape). . My 3 star rating is an average of 4-5 stars after initial experience because it was…

Weak and cheap. the best in learning and education

In my opinion it's not worth it. My daughter is one of them. A few months later I bought a friend of my daughter's for her birthday one of Marshalls that was Melissa & Doug. It was a little smaller but of much better quality. This one I bought and am considering has some kind of cheap brittle screen that punctured within the first month. The Melissa & Doug model I paid $5 less for at Marshall is much better quality and still looks the same as the day I bought it for my daughter's friend. I wish

Not to use but still love it

This year was the first time I grew plants to attract butterflies. One morning I spotted a ruffed caterpillar happily munching on my fennel leaves. I was so excited! I didn't really have the right place to record them, but I was so desperate to see their development. I saw this little box and immediately ordered it. I have a prime but never thought I would get it the same day. Well yes I have! This is such an adorable case that would be perfect for this little creature doing her hirsalis. I…

I know it looks like a toy but I bought it for myself

I know it looks like a toy but I bought it for myself. We just got a plot and I wanted to know what kind of moth/butterfly these caterpillars would grow into. So I found this bug catcher online and it worked great! The caterpillar I found has formed a beautiful cocoon there and we are waiting for it to come out. We also have oak galls and next spring I plan to find the fallen greenery and place it there. When the children arrive I will plant any locusts or other creatures they find and then we…

  • There are more interesting options.

I bought this to breed some Monarch caterpillars thinking I it would be a great way for my 4 year old daughter to learn about them and watch them grow.1. It came with a gap in the grid. It was small but still large enough for the caterpillar to run away. I had to patch with Duct Tape.2. The round plastic spin hole did not seal well. I ended up wrapping cling film around the inside of the round piece of plastic to (again) make sure no caterpillars escaped.3. I have small hands but of course it…

Pros
  • Easy to install
Cons
  • There are new competitors

We bought the Critter Case, Bugs AZ and the Explorer Outdoor Adventure Kit (you know... things that are often bought together to get you into it spend a little more). Well it was worth it. Our 7 year old granddaughter is interested in science, experiments etc. She really enjoyed it. Her 2 year old (almost) little sister was also… walking around with the Critter Case (with the plastic spider included) and showing it to everyone…. ERRORS! ERRORS! The outdoor adventure kit comes with great things…
