Leak after 5 years - poor quality

I bought this Gates water pump in 2015 from Revain. I chose Gates over other brands because of its reputation as a leading manufacturer of automotive products. I was wrong - after 5 years it started leaking. I keep adding coolant and it keeps dripping. First I said I would only change seals as the pump is made by Gates and should last 5+ years. I did all this and today I noticed a puddle of coolant under the car. It should flow out of the drain hole. Their warranty is only 12,000 miles or 1โ€ฆ

Direct, dirty, but easy installation.

Bought to replace my original pump as I found a slow leak on one of the seals. No problems out of the box and all the old hardware fits very well with no problems. I went ahead and bought a thermostat housing because why not just start from scratch? All in all, the installation was pretty easy, I even took the opportunity to just swap out the A/C belt as long as I had extra room to move. The biggest PITA was removing the old hoses without tearing or breaking them, but I got them out with little

Do not Cry. Everything will be fine.

The good old drain on my original water pump leaked like a strainer. I installed this new water pump along with a Gates 33910 thermostat housing on a 2003 5.3 liter Chevrolet Suburban with no problems. Both the water pump and thermostat housing come with a thermostat housing o-ring. So if you're using your original thermostat housing, there's no need to order a new O-ring. I see reviews saying otherwise, but I have two gaskets for the block as well as an o-ring for the thermostat housingโ€ฆ

So far, so good! good for spares

I just installed it today but while I can't comment on the durability of the pump I have to say it has run without incident and looks perfect for a factory block. I installed it on a 2003 Hummer H2. While replacing the pump, I also replaced the radiator, upper/lower hoses, ribbed and A/C belts, and thermostat. These are all potential failure points in a 150,000 mile car, so I just did everything at once. The whole thing took about 4 hours. It might be quicker/easier on another truck because myโ€ฆ

Broken thread on the thermostat housing.

I am currently giving this Gates water pump 3 stars and will update as needed. The reason for only 3 stars is that when I tried to tighten the new Gates thermostat housing to 11 ft-lbs, the threads on the thermostat housing loosened. I originally used the screws that came with the new thermostat housing. They were about 1/8 inch shorter than the bearing bolts I just removed from the old thermostat/water pump. At 11 ft-lbs, the bolts just kept turning. I replaced the new bolts with the oldโ€ฆ

Pros

  • High price

Replaced Napa's "lifetime" POS warranty, which lasted 2.5 years and just under 30,000 miles, with our 2002 Avalanche with 169,000 miles. The cooling system was otherwise in perfect condition (the pre-purged DEX coolant that was removed for this new Gates pump was perfect, although we didn't reuse it). Thus, in my opinion, there was no reason for the Napa part to fail so early (thankfully it got caught near the house and didn't overheat). So the move to Gates is based on a lot of positiveโ€ฆ

I have 2 2004 Chevy Silverados, one 5.3 and one 4.8. Both Trucks With just over 200,000 miles on them, the water pump on both trucks failed within a week of each other. On the first truck I switched to the Oreilly brand Murray and also replaced the thermostat and housing. everything together costs about $200. The pump itself costs about $140. It was a strong, well made pump with a lifetime guarantee, very nice finish on all seals. Came with standard paper spacers which I used with a smallโ€ฆ

Good product! in spare parts

So far, so good! Everything went perfectly! Just some general guidelines: - Do not tighten the thermostat housing bolts to the correct torque; Aluminum threads do not hold. You will tear the strings! Just pull them all the way down and then give them an extra 1/8 to 1/4 turn. This pump comes with metal seals. In the place where the pump connects to the engine, you do not need any other sealant. Just make sure you clean the contact surfaces thoroughly. You may need a blade and then some acetoneโ€ฆ
