Don't touch Firmware

Revain wants me to mention "Thickness", "Warmth" and "Wi-Fi signal", although they are completely irrelevant to the test. It's a warm rectangle and I'm not using WiFi. I ran into firmware (video resolution) issues and tried switching to coreboot. I flashed her image and it's like locking the device - no matter what I do, there's no console, no video. It's not clear what went wrong and I was certainly stupid trying to flash the firmware without thousands of dollars worth of jtag hardware, but…

Works well, good customer support

Before I bought it I contacted customer service with some general questions. This included support for parts, differences between Coreboot and AMI BIOS, and a few others. They were very pleasant and informative and did not put any pressure on my interest in the product. What makes this purchase a better deal than other vendors is that they offer US support and offer a variety of hardware and support options compared to the base models, which are really just bare-bones. I've run Untangle on this

Nice box, powerful, works great.

I like this box very much. I know it's a rebranded Chinese box, but I don't mind paying for US support locally instead of shipping the box back to Hong Kong or China. The silly thing preventing this from getting 5 runs is the port mark. The designation of the first two WAN and LAN ports makes it difficult to set up the box. I'd rather they just label ports 1-6 so I can use them as needed without causing confusion. I had a previous Unravel box where the first 2 ports were 2 WAN ports. Now I have

Possibly defective device (Quality Assurance)

My experience: Over 25 years of IT experience in enterprise software and hardware. I received this device and was happy to use it as soon as possible. It appears that the HDMI port on the device may be defective (quality assurance issues). The monitor only shows the signal sent by the device *half* the time I turn on the device. In the other half of the cases, nothing is displayed on the monitor even when the device is turned on. I updated the BIOS to the latest version and also tried different

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Power socket required

Good choice for a fanless mini pc

I give this Protectli Vault 6 (FW6B) port five stars not because it's perfect but because it's functional. Let's remove the only negative (at least for my use case). I had a Samsung EVO860 SSD lying around (2.5 inch form factor). The FW6B has mounting brackets for a 2.5-inch drive under the cover. The brackets were too close together, making it difficult to install the SSD. It just didn't fit 100%. But in the end I was able to get it to work. I also installed a Patriot 8GB RAM stick, leaving…
