I was concerned when ordering this, that it would be made of rough planks that would provide a haven for spiders. We were looking for a large clock to go on our (weather protected) outdoor back patio. We've had a couple of big clocks over the years, and they tend to draw the spider crowd to set up camp behind them.Good news: while the face does appear to be some sort of wood, it seems to be manufactured: that is, it is pressed and painted to look like planks glued together, but in fact, it is all one piece, with a smooth back, that will be a lot easier to clean when necessary. It's an attractive unit, with the wooden face circled in metal, long hour and minute hands, and the Roman numerals cleverly made from identical pieces of metal, fixed with screws at each end to form the Roman numbers. The clock is easy to read from anywhere in our backyard.Hanging is an issue. The instructions on this product page say simply to hang with a screw from the keyhole in the clock motor. That won't work. There isn't one! There are 2 x hangers on the upper edges of the back of the clock, but as other reviewers have pointed out, these are unevenly mounted, making it almost impossible to put wall hooks in the correct places for hanging. I decided that using a piece of wire was the way to go, so I could mount one solid hook in the stucco wall, and hang the clock on the wire. I used a piece of 17 gauge wire I had at hand -- heavy enough to bear the weight, but light enough to twist the ends around the provided hangers. I also cut a piece of plastic and used duct tape to tape it over the clock motor to keep spiders and their nasty business out of the works. The clock requires 1 x AA battery. When it's time, I'll just lift the plastic and replace it.The clock is large, but in my opinion, not super heavy for what it is: according to my bathroom scale, it weighs 8 lbs. I got the wire strung on the heavy duty hook I screwed into the stucco mount, and that's all there was to it.The ticking is not noticeable. Maybe you'd hear it in a quiet room, but definitely not on our patio. This big clock adds some rustic farm-like charm to our patio. Recommended.
