Review on SanDisk Extreme PRO SD UHS-II USB Type-C Card Reader/Writer: Super-Fast 500MB/s Data Transfer Rate! by Eric Amiradaki

Awards Write-protected, true USB-C

Sandisk SDDR-409 Series SD card adapter does what many adapters fail to do. Firstly, the write protection notch of the SD series cards is taken into account. You'd be surprised how many (seemingly almost all) adapters ignore the write-protect notch, exposing your cards to unwanted writes from operating system components, unscrupulous utility software, and who knows what else. This adapter helps to avoid such oversights. Second, it's _real_ USB-C: the connection is orientation-agnostic. Plug it in however you like: as long as the connectors match and your computer can find the right driver, the thing will work. A cheaper adapter I tried at a local store only works if it's plugged in the right way round. For something that claims to be "USB-C" this is unacceptable. Speed claims vary but far exceed anything I can dispute. The box lists a 312MB/s limit for UHS-II speeds, while the adapter's description on Revain's website mentions 500MB/s. Well, the fastest SD-series cards I have are the UHS-I U3 (hey, those faster speeds come at a price!), which are designed to hold write speeds of around 30MB/s. less than 1/10 of the maximum speed claims of this adapter. I tried an unofficial check by disabling the system write cache (yes, Windows 10 Pro recognized SDDR-409 as removable and set it to "quick delete", meaning no write cache is saved) and the 4,294,966,784 -byte file under a new name in the same UHS- I U3 SDXC card. It took 2 min. 34 sec for a speed of almost 28 MB/s (or almost 26 MB/s for the binary mass). This is most likely not an issue with SDDR-409, but at least I know I can get the speeds I expect from the cards I have on hand.

Pros
  • Highly rated by testers for support and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
